Elon Musk once said that if you get up in the morning and think the future will be better, it is a bright day, otherwise it’s not.

One of the most brilliant minds of the modern times, yet he is a living, breathing human being, not so different from you and me. Only thing that separates people like Elon Musk from the masses is the way he thinks. Because what you think — you are.

He was born far away from the center of the commercial world, in South Africa. Bullied as a kid, abused and depressed. Things that are relatable to many of us. From those hardships one of the most important men in modern history was forged. Here are my top 5 favorite advice from Elon Musk for young people.

1. Have a goal

If you want to be more like Elon Musk, your goal can never just be “Make more money”. It needs to be more meaningful than that, so that what you do may be called great work. And work can only be great work if you love what you do. Having a clear goal and manifested vision of how it’ll play out will make all the difference in your life. Identifying a problem in society, and trying to fix it could be a good goal. For Elon Musk, one of those goals is eliminating traffic, he tackled that goal by digging tunnels under huge cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and putting cars on high-speed electro-magnet tunnels, that kind of levitate your car and shoot it to the other end of the city. Now that’s just a crazy example, if you lack capital, there are still great ways to be useful for society, do great work and earn money as well. Because once you fix a problem, people will gladly give you money for it.

2. Seek Criticism

Don’t be trapped in the delusion that your ideas can’t fail. Get as much feedback as possible. Positive feedback is always nice, get a little pat on the back for all the hard work you’ve been doing. Always make sure to keep examining yourself and make sure you truly believe that what you do is great work and you truly believe in your ideals. Be thankful for someone who tells you to rethink your plan, as that criticism will keep you pushing for a better outcome.

3. Don’t over-do

Don’t try to spread yourself too thin by running multiple companies or businesses. Concentrate on doing one thing at a time, or building one company at a time, and giving that project your all. On the other hand, as Mr. Musk does, work harder and longer than everybody else. That’s how you get more done in less time, and how you get ahead.

“I think it’s possible for ordinary people to become extraordinary”

4. Don’t fear failure

Understand one thing, failure, just like any other concept, is a man made concept. The act of not doing something correctly is labeled as failure. Treat it as it is, the act of not doing something correctly, after you’re done with that, you try again and do it a little more correctly, and then even more, until you get it right. Deconstructed like that, with labels off, “failure” doesn’t seem that bad, does it? It should be called “Learning” rather than “Failure”. Either way, the most important thing is to try. Because the difference between two people with great ideas is the successful one tried, and the unsuccessful one didn’t.

5. Choose to be extraordinary

According to Elon Musk, we can choose to be extraordinary. I’ve recently learned that 80% of the people on this spinning Earth think the same thoughts every single day. Imagine that, same thoughts every day. So if your thoughts don’t change, your life doesn’t change. Thinking you’re safe in a little bubble of never-changing life is the biggest misconception there is. There is so much more to life than routine, be willing to go on wild adventures without knowing the outcome. Do the unexpected. Strive for always greater goals. Life can be free and beautiful. Life can be a wonderful adventure.
